Abstract

Balance or differential gearing; compulsory differential driving.- Relates to chain-track tractors or locomotives of the kind described in Specification 16,345/04, and comprises an arrangement of driving- a x 1 e and clutches to facilitate differential driving for steering in addition to the ordinary differential braking. The mechanism can also be disengaged so that a winding-drum mounted upon the driving - axle can be used for hauling. The chain-wheels v, bl engage the endless tracks on opposite sides of the vehicle, the lefthand chain-wheel under ordinary driving conditions being driven from the left-hand member f of the differential gear through the medium of the through-axle a and clutch members w, g, and the right-hand chain-wheel being driven from the other differential gear member g by means of the clutch members e<1>, f<1> and sleeve a<1>. The steering is then effected by brakes acting differentially on the brake drums x, c<1>. To facilitate rapid turning, the full power of the engine is applied to one wheel only, by disconnecting the clutch belonging to the other wheel and locking the differential gear by the clutch i, h. The winding-drum o may be driven at the same or double the speed of the driving-wheel c accord. ing to whether the differential gear is locked or the member g held against rotation.
