[Also in Division F2] A motor-vehicle bevel gear differential comprises side-wheels 122, 124, freely journalled on an input shaft 62, meshing bevel planets 130, 132 freely journalled and retained by a ring 138 on cross-pins 134, 136 fast with the input shaft 62,the side wheels 122, 124 having extensions 128, 126 splined at90, 70 to driving bevel pinion, 81, 70 coaxially arranged on the shaft 62 and journalled at 84, 86 and 74, 72 in a differential casing 20, the input shaft axis being slightly inclined from a right-angled relationship relative the usual transverse half-shafts (not shown), whereby the driving pinions 81, 70 respectively engage half shaft output ring gears 106, 94 at one point only on diagonally opposite sides, the arrangement permitting the half shaft axles to be inclined downwardly from the wheels 10, 12 to lower the differential gear assembly and reduce road clearance between the floor of the vehicle body and the road surface for low silhouette body styling. Constant velocity ratio joints (50) (Fig. 4, not shown) are fitted between the outer ends of the half shafts and the wheel hubs 34, 36.
