Abstract

907,956. Change-speed gear. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. June 9, 1961 [June 10, 1960], No. 21019/61. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] In a multi-axle vehicle, e.g. a lorry, having gearing comprising first and second trains to either of which a driving shaft can be coupled at will, the first train leading to a wheel of the second train and one output each being taken from the input and output wheels of the second train, a differential gear is interposed between the input wheel of the second train and the driving shaft, the planet wheel carrier being connectible to the driving shaft and the input wheel of the second train being connected to one bevel wheel of the differential gear, the other bevel wheel of which forms one output member. As shown in Fig. 1 a pinion 12 is loosely mounted on a driving shaft 10 and engages a pinion 15 which, together with a pinion 16, is fast upon a layshaft 17, the pinion 16 engaging a pinion 22 fast on an output shaft 23 leading to one rear axle of the vehicle. An additional shaft 28 leading to the front axle may be connected to the pinion 22 by a releasable dog clutch 29. A shaft 13 is fast with a planet wheel carrier 18 of a differential gear, one bevel 26 of which is connected to a shaft 27 leading to a rear driving axle, and the other bevel 25 of which is connected by a shaft 24 to a pinion 20 loosely mounted on shaft 13 in mesh with pinion 16, the pinions 20, 16 and 22 forming a gear train of ratio 1 : 1. A clutch member 30 is fast with shaft 24 and may be coupled by a sleeve 33 to a clutch member 32 fast with the planet carrier 18. A clutch 11 may connect the driving shaft 10 with either the pinion 12 or with the shaft 13 and the clutches 11, 33 and 29 may be operated from a common lever 37. In the position shown, the clutches are in neutral. If the clutch 11 is shifted to the left, the clutch 33 locks the differential with shaft 24 and the shaft 10 is simultaneously coupled with pinion 12, so that the drive is through gears 12 and 15 giving a step-down ratio, and the 1: 1 ratio gear 20, 22 to the locked differential and shaft 27 and shaft 23 respectively. If the clutch 11 is shifted to the right, shafts 10 and 13 are connected and shaft 27 is driven through the bevel gear 26, shaft 23 being driven through bevel gear 25 and gear train 20, 16 and 22. In a modification, Fig. 2, for a two-axle vehicle, the output shaft 27 is connected to the rear driving axle and the output shaft 23<SP>1</SP> to the front driving axle.
