Abstract

650,577. Variable-speed gearing ; clutches. SCHMID, L. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 5577. Convention date, March 13, 1947. [Class 80(ii)] A series of freely rotatable gears 6 In constant mesh with a corresponding series of gears 21 fixed on a driven shaft 20 are adapted to be selectively clutched to a driving shaft 2 by means of a dog clutch member 4 slidable on but rotatable with the driving shaft. The clutch member 4 engages with clutch teeth 19 internally of the gears 6 and is provided with split friction synchronizing rings 14, 15 on either side of its clutch teeth. Gear selection is effected by a sliding sleeve 5 having a series of notches 25 engageable by spring- pressed balls 24 carried by the shaft 2. In a modified arrangement the friction synchronizing rings are provided on each of the gears 6 instead of on the clutch member 4.
