Abstract

817,239. Variable-speed gearing. VOITH G.m.b.H., J. M. July 12, 1957 [July 12, 1956], No. 22220/57. Class 80 (2). Two forward and two reverse speeds are obtained from six gears arranged in pairs on parallel driving, driven and layshafts, the axes of which lie on the apices of a triangle. Loose gears 7, 8 on the driving shaft 5 are adapted to be alternatively clutched thereto by a sliding clutch member 13 and mesh respectively with a gear 27 fixed on a layshaft 25 and a gear 16 loose on the driven shaft 18. The gear 16 is also in mesh with a gear 26 fixed on the layshaft and is adapted to be clutched alternatively to another loose gear 17 in mesh with the layshaft gear 27 with the driven shaft 18. With the clutch sleeve 13 engaging gear 7 two forward speeds are obtained by moving clutch sleeve 23 on shaft 18 to engage gear 16 or gear 17. With clutch sleeve 13 engaging gear 8 two reverse speeds are obtained by the alternative engagement of clutch sleeve 23. The forward and reverse ratios may be equal. In a modified arrangement the gears 7, 8 on the driving shaft are secured together and axially slidable thereon into mesh with the gear 27 or 16 respectively. The gear 17 may also be axially slidable on the driven shaft 18 into or out of mesh with the gear 27. Friction clutches or positive synchronous clutches may be used instead of the dog clutches shown.
