Abstract
624,622. Variable-speed and reversing-gearing. AVERY, Ltd., W. & T., and HINDE, P. B. June 4, 1946, No. 16859. [Class 80 (ii)] In a variable-speed gear applicable to testing machines of the kind described in Specification 624,621, [Group XIX], constant and variable-speed driving pulleys 6, 7, Fig. 1; power through a co-axial sleeve and shaft 16, 15 respectively two elements 17, 18 of a differential whose third element 19 drives an epicyclic reversing gear 20 controlled by ratchet detent wheels 26, 26a, 28, 30 actuated by means operated by the movements of the steel-yard of the testing machine such as solenoids 34, 34a, Fig. 3. As shown, the pulleys 6, 7 are belt driven from invariable and expending pulleys 3, 4 respectively mounted on the spindle of an electric motor 1. The diameter of the spring pulley 4 is adjusted by a swinging jockey pulley 9 controlled by a nut 12 screwing along a rod 11 turned by a handwheel (not shown). The nut 12 also operates an indicating pointer 13a moving over a graduated scale, on the mechanism housing. The epicyclic reversing gear comprises a driving planet carrier 20 having clusters of three stepped planets 21 engaging suns 22 - 24 respectively. The sun 22 is rigid with the output shaft 25, which also carries two oppositely directed ratchet wheels 26, 26a, while the suns 23, 24 each carry one of two oppositely directed ratchet wheels 28, 30. The wheels 28, 30 are respectively engaged by detents 33b, 33c, Fig. 4, actuated by the solenoids 34, 34a through spring-loaded levers 31, 31a and plungers 32, 32a. The plunger 32 acts on the detent 33b via a supplementary lever 38. The wheels 26, 26a are respectively engaged by two spring-pressed detents 33, 33a rotating with the detents 33c, 33b respectively. With both solenoids de-energised the detents 33, 33a hold the output shaft 25 from rotation in either direction. Energisation of the solenoid 34 depresses the plunger 32 to release the detent 33a and engage the detent 33b to cause rotation of the shaft 25 in one direction, and energisation of the solenoid 34a depresses the plunger 32a to release the detent 33 and engage the detent 33c to cause rotation of the shaft 25 reversely. A wedge bolt 35, Fig. 1, is manually slidable to disengage all the detents for 'independent manual rotation of the shaft 25.
