Abstract

609,651. Variable-speed gearing. P.R.T. LABORATORIES, Ltd., and BYFORD, M. S. March 19, 1946, No. 8554. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (c)] In a variable-speed device suitable for the tuning control of radio apparatus giving a large and relatively small speed-reduction ratio, a shaft 10 has secured to it a disc 17 with a V-section groove 18 of involute spiral shape formed in its forward face, and a gear-wheel 14 loosely mounted upon it. A driven shaft 11 has fixed thereto a gear-wheel 13 meshing with the wheel 14 and a cord pulley 22, which serves for transmitting motion to the driven device, e.g. variable condenser. A ball 19, carried in the free end of a rocking arm member 20, engages the V-groove 18. The member 20 is loosely mounted upon the driven shaft 11, and is kept in frictional engagement with the pulley 22 by a spring washer 21. A pin 15 on the gear-wheel 14 is positioned so as to lie in the path of a pin 16 projecting radially from the shaft 10. On rotation of the shaft 10, the shaft 11 is rotated at a high reduction ratio by the movement of the ball 19 in the V-groove 18, until the pin 16 engages the pin 15, whereupon the drive is effected at a low reduction ratio through the gear-wheels 14, 13. In a modification, the driving and driven shafts are nearly coaxial and a direct drive is effected by a pin on the driven pulley engaging a radially-projecting pin on the driving shaft.
