Abstract

687,404. Variable-speed gearing. DAVI', F., and FIORIO, U. Jan. 17, 1949, No. 1307/49. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 18, 1949.] Class 80 (ii). Continuously-variable speed gearing comprises a sun gear 2, Fig. 4, secured to the driving (or driven) shaft 1 and engaged by planet pinions 3 carried by pins 5 slidable in two or more arms 7 secured to the driven (or driving) shaft 9, the pinions 3 being prevented from rotating in one direction on their pins 5 by ratchet or roller detents 4 and the shaft 9 being adjustable in a guideway 8 radial to the shaft 1 so as to vary the speed ratio. Alternatively, the pinions 3 may each comprise a pair of helically-toothed pinions 16, 17, Fig. 9, normally urged apart by a spring 20 so as to engage ratchet teeth on their end faces with ratchet teeth on arms 21 fixed to the pins 5, the pinions 16, 17 being moved together so as to free them, in one direction of movement, by the reaction of the helical teeth. In place of the radial guide 8, crank or eccentric means may be employed to adjust the displaceable shaft, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). The gear may be combined with a differential gear so as to obtain a neutral position. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, describes other arrangements in which the pinions 3 are dispensed with, the pins 5 themselves having a one-way connection with the rim of the wheel 2 by means of roller or ratchet detents. It also describes an arrangement in which a driving plate 33, Fig. 20 (Cancelled), has pins 5 engaging slots in arms 34 having individual one-way connections 35 with the displaceable driven shaft 9, and an arrangement in which pinions 28, Fig. 18 (Cancelled), carried by arms 29 secured to the displaceable shaft engage a gear annulus 30 on the other shaft through the intermediary of pinions 31 carried by arms 32 pivoted on the arms 29, one-way detents being applied either to the wheels 28 or to the wheels 31. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
