Abstract

572,202. Cooling brakes. PRATT, J. H., and IRVING, J. S. June 12, 1943, No. 9494. [Class 103 (i)] Brake drums are cooled by the provision of vanes 12, 16 arranged substantially radially and axially respectively between an outer sheet metal shell 14, 15 and a disc 10 bolted at 11 to the drum so as to form radial and axial passages. The vanes may instead be cast in one with the drum and the shell be secured to the vanes. Cooling air is drawn in at the inner end of the radial passages and is discharged through the axial passages. The vanes may be curved or inclined with respect to the radii and drum axis respectively.
