Abstract
A brake drum 10 comprises a cylindrical shell 12 and an end wall 18. The end wall 18 has a plurality of radially extending grooves 28 in its outer surface which form air passageways when the drum is attached to a wheel hub, such that air flows outwardly along the passageways by the centrifugal effect as the wheel rotates. The shell 12 has a plurality of extending fins 50 on its outer surface to enhance cooling. <IMAGE>
Description
A BRAKE DRUM
The present invention relates to a brake drum and in particular to a brake drum which is designed to improve air cooling thereof.
The present invention provides a brake drum comprising an end wall for connection to a wheel hub) and a cylindrical shell, the end wall having a plurality of radially extending recesses therein such that, in use, air can pass radially along the recesses, the cylindrical shell having a plurality of axially extending fins on its outer surface.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig 1 is an end elevation of a brake drum according to the invention;
Fig 2 is an enlarged sectional view along the line Il-I I of Fig 1;
Fig 3 is an enlarged sectional view along part of the line III-III of Fig 1; and
Fig 4 is a sectional view of the brake drum of Fig 1 attached to a wheel.
Referring to the drawings, a brake drum 1(3 comprises a cylindrical shell 12 and has an open end 14 and a closed end 16. At the closed end 16 is an end wall 18.
The end wall 18 comprises an outer annular portion 2(3 connected to the shell 12 and an inner annular portion 22. The inner annular portion 22 is nearer the open end 14 than the outer annular portion 2(3 and the two annular portions are joined by a frustro-conical portion 24. The inner annular portion 22 is thicker than the frustro-conical portion 24 and extends axially towards the closed end 16 to form an annular raised flange 26. The raised flange 26 has five radial recesses in the form of grooves 28 extending from its inner edge to its outer edge. The grooves shown are rectangular in cross section.The inner annular portion 22 has five holes 3(3 symmetrically spaced between the grooves 28, and two countersunk holes 32 which are on opposite sides of the brake drum, each being between one of the holes 3(3 and one of the grooves 28. Extending from the outer edge 31 of the inner annular portion 22 towards the open end 14 of the brake drum 1(3 is an annular ridge 34 having an inner edge 36 which is parallel to the axis of the drum and an outer edge 38 which tapers inwardly towards the open end of the brake drum such that the base 4(3 of the annular ridge 34 is wider than its peak 42.The inner edge 44 of the inner annular portion 22 defines a central bore 46 through the brake drum having one half 45, nearest the closed end of the brake drum, which is cylindrical, and another half 47 nearest the open end of the brake drum, which flares radially outwardly towards the open end of the brake drum. Extending radially outwardly fro the outer surface 48 of the shell 12 is a rim 49 having a plurality of fins 5(3 extending axially therefrom towards the closed end of the brake drum. The rim 49 is about a third of the way along the shell 12 from the open end of the drum and the fins 5(3 extend axially to a point about two thirds of the way along the shell 12 from the open end of the drum.
Fig 4 shows the brake drum 1(3 attached to a wheel 52.
The brake drum 18 is attached to a hub 54 such that the raised flange 26 abuts the wheel 52. The grooves 28 form air passageways 56 between the drum and the wheel.
A hub cap 58 is fitted to the wheel and covers the hub 54. Brake shoes 6(3 are arranged for contacting with the shell 12. As the wheel rotates air in the grooves 28 flows radially outwardly due to the centrifugal effect. This sets up a current of air, as shown by the arrows in Fig 4, which flows under the hub cap 58 at its outer edge, in towards the hub 54 and into the inner ends of the air passageways, out along the air passageways and on out between the end wall 14 of the brake drum d the wheel. This flow of air cools the drum. Cooling of the shell 12 of the drum is enhanced by the fins 5(3 which have a large surface area and can dissipate heat rapidly into the air current as it passes over them. The flow of the current of air past the hub 54 can help to cool the hub.
Claims (7)
