Abstract

1,032,923. Disc brakes. KNORR-BREMSE G.m.b.H. Feb. 14, 1963 [Feb. 14, 1962], No. 6081/63. Heading F2E. A disc for a disc brake comprises a friction ring of grey iron which is cast around radially extending projections on a cast steel hub member such that the ring is able to expand and move radially on the projections, the projections being designed to take both circumferential and axial thrust. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2 (Fig. 1 only being shown), the hub 10 has radial arms 11 carrying studs 12 around which is cast a friction ring 13 comprising two annular discs 14, a series of cooling vanes 15 and webs 16. Studs 12 are, e.g., rubbed with a graphitecontaining chill mould dressing before casting to ensure that the webs 16 are not welded to the bolts, so that radial expansion of the ring relative to the hub can take place. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the arms 11 are replaced by enlargements 23 on an annular flange 21 integral with the hub 10, the periphery of the flange after casting the ring 13 being disposed in a corresponding groove in a cylindrical portion 25 of the ring which is perforated to allow circulation of air between the vanes. In another embodiment, (Fig. 5, not shown) the hub 10 has a web 31 extending radially almost to the outer periphery of the ring 13, the latter having a cylindrical portion at its outer periphery which includes a thickened portion 35 cast around the periphery of the web, two sets of cooling vanes 37 being provided on opposite sides of the web 31, and the cylindrical portion being perforated to allow circulation of air between the vanes.
