Abstract

531,232. Rotary engines and pumps. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Manly Corporation). July 14, 1939, No. 20592. [Class 110 (ii)] Fixed abutment type, piston having outwardly sliding vanes. The vanes are pressed outwardly by fluid at a pressure higher than the working pressure of an engine or the delivery pressure of a pump. Fluid is admitted behind the vanes of an engine 10, Fig. 1, by a pipe 52 connected in front of a pressure-reducing valve 61 in the supply pipe 42. The valve 61 may be byepassed by a line including a valve operated by a governor when the engine speed is high enough. In the case of a pump 10, Fig. 9, the pressure in the pipe 152 is raised above the pressure in the delivery pipe 142 by means of a pump 170. The increase in pressure is determined by a valve 160 which permits excess fluid from the pump 170 to pass to the pipe 142. This arrangement may be used for a motor. A suitable arrangement of piping and a reversing valve may be used for reversing a motor. A motor comprises a rotor 15; Fig. 2, splined on a shaft 22 supported in bearings 23, carrying radially-sliding vanes and operating in an oval casing which provides two opposed abutments. The casing is formed of a ring 25 having a circular exterior and an oval interior and two end plates 34, 35 housed in an outer casing 10. Pressure fluid from the pipes 52, is led by grooves in the end plate 35 to the vane pockets. Similar grooves in the end plate 34 serve to equalize the pressures in the vane pockets. These grooves may be arranged to maintain the connection to the vane pockets, or, to make that connection only up to the opening of the-exhaust. In the latter case, grooves are. provided in the plate 34 which connect the vane pockets to the exhaust pipe during the exhaust period.
