Abstract

587,585. Centrifugal pumps ; rotary engines. TRIGGS, W. W. (Nash Engineering Co.). July 19, 1944, No. 13835. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (ii)] In a pump, or engine, of the liquid-ring type, the outer part of the ring bears on a lobe 21 which is rotatable through fluid friction, or positively driven by means such as a stub shaft 54. The space outside the lobe is maintained free from liquid by means of drains in the casing, to prevent hydraulic friction losses. A double rotor, Fig. 5, is axially balanced hydraulically and has a surge-preventing plate 84, in the parts, accommodated in slots in the rotor. In a modification, the surge plate forms part of the rotor and may have gear teeth on its periphery which drive internally-meshing teeth on the lobe. The rotor 22, Fig. 1, is secured by a shaft 25 which is supported in bearings 26, and the lobe shaft 27 is carried by bearings 28. Vanes 29, in the rotor, form pockets which co-operate with ports 32 in the cone member 24 leading to the usual inlet and outlet ports. When starting up, sealing liquid enters passages 36, 39 and is led inside the lobe through a passage 37 as described in Specification 379,891. Liquid for cooling and sealing, surrounds the shaft 25 and a seal 35 and is vented to the inlet chamber by way of an orifice 38. Leakage liquid is thrown off a lip 40 and passes to the pump inlet through a port 41. Liquid collecting in the outer casing 20 flows through a check valve 42. Liquid leaking into a space 43 passes through passages 44, 45 to the pump inlet. A drain 46 is provided between shaft seals. Hydraulic balancing passages 47 are provided across the lobe. Stiffening ribs for the casing and bearing supports, are provided. A lobe drive, embodying a flexible coupling, may be attached to the stub shaft 54. In Fig. 5, a built-up lobe 61 runs on non-metallic bearings 68, which may be made of " Bakelite " (Registered Trade Mark). Sealing means may be as described in Specification 458,058. The surge-preventing ring 84 may be made of Bakelite. Spaces 85 are provided to reduce the weight of the lobe. Fig. 13 shows another arrangement in which two revolving lobes 125, 126 are journalled on cylindrical portions 127, 128 of the port members, and are connected to each other by a central spider 129. Rotors 121, 122 are secured to a shaft 120. Adjusting wedges 131 are used for bearings 130 and to position the lobes in the casing. For an engine, motive fluid is admitted to the liquidpiston chambers, and exhausted later. Specification 324,249, [Class 110 (i)], and U.S.A. Specification 953,222 also are referred to.
