Abstract

923,657. Rotary power plant. S. BURGESS (K. Eickmann). Oct. 7, 1960, No. 34378/60. Class 110 (2). A rotary pump, compressor, or liquid, gas, steam or I.C. engine of the outwardly-sliding vane type, comprises vanes having axial extensions radially slidable in slots formed in plates adjacent the rotor sides and rotatable with the rotor and a chamber containing or receiving fluid under pressure disposed axially outwardly of a plate and closed by a cover rotating with the rotor, the cover or rotor parts being axially slidable to an extent limited by axial fastening means to provide a counterbalancing pressure chamber. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a rotor 1 eccentrically mounted in an adjustable casing ring 2 is flanked by slotted side-plates 3 enclosed by casing members 4, 5. The casing member 4 is formed on its outer face with an annular recess 9 sealingly closed by a complementary flange on a cover member 8. Bolts 11 secure the rotor, side-plates, casing and cover members together. The inlet and exhaust of the medium to and from the working chambers takes place through the rotor shaft (not shown) and channels 16 in the rotor 1 and a bush 14 on which the rotor is fixed. On low pressure machines in which friction can absorb a large proportion of the generated power the lower pressure in the recess 9 allows larger axial clearances between the rotor parts with consequent reduced friction. On high pressure machines in which friction losses are proportionately not so great, clearances are reduced, to reduce leakage of pressure fluid and increase machine efficiency. Disc springs 25, Fig. 3, may be fitted in a recess in a side-plate 22 to act in opposition to fluid pressure in a chamber 27. In this embodiment the rotor 21 is concentrically mounted and a close fit in its casing with a pair of diametrically disposed working chambers as shown in Fig. 4. In another embodiment, three rotors separated by side-plates and with further outer sideplates are mounted on a common shaft to rotate together. The axial length of each outer rotor equals half that of the middle rotor and the working chambers of the rotors are arranged to improve the balancing of the rotor parts. The eccentric casings may be either fixed or adjustable. If adjustable, that of the middle rotor is arranged to move in opposition to the casings of the outer rotors. Specification 744,446 is referred to.
