[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] The invention relates to change-speed gearing, for cycles and motor-cycles, of the kind in which a chain 21 is shifted laterally on to different sized driven sprockets 33 by means of a shiftsprocket 20, mounted on a shiftable carrier 22 on which is pivoted a lever 34 carrying a tensionsprocket 35, a single spring 37 being provided for positively urging the carrier 22 in one direction, viz., towards the low-speed position against the pull of the Bowden control-cable 1, and also for urging the lever in the chain-tensioning direction. According to the invention the single spring 37 is connected between a fixed part 38 and the end 36 of the tensioning-lever 34, which end 36, during a shift, moves about the shift-sprocket carrier 22 in a direction which coincides with that of a component of movement which is imparted to the said carrier 22, whereby the spring length and hence the chaintension remain substantially constant in all operative positions. The carrier 22 is secured to a member 23 which constitutes one side of a deformable parallelogram, the opposite side 24 of which is adjustably fixed to the cycle-frame, and is connected to the movable side 23 by two pivoted sides 25. 26. Lateral movement of the shift- and tension - sprocket carrier 22, 23, to change speed, is produced. by deforming the parallelogram by swinging the pivoted sides 25, 26 under the control of the Bowden cable 1 acting against the spring 37. Such deformation results in the carrier 22, 23 having a longitudinal component of movement in addition to its transverse chain-shifting movement, and this longitudinal component compensates for the relative movement of the chain-tensioning lever 34 about the carrier 22, 23 as the chain engages a different driven sprocket 33, whereby the length of the spring 37 and hence the chaintension is kept substantially constant in all operative positions.
