Abstract
411,360. Variable-speed chain gearing. SCHULZ, J. G., 3, Rue Maspero, Paris. Oct. 26, 1933, No. 29758. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1932. [Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed driving-mechanism for cycles &c., of the type in which a single chain is shifted from one sprocket to another of different size by a chain guide or sprocket, the chain guide is given both an axial or transverse displacement and a displacement towards or away from the axis of the sprockets, so that the length of chain between the guide and the sprocket is maintained as short as possible, in order to facilitate the engagement of the chain with each sprocket. The chain 52, Figs. 3 and 4, passes over a chain guide sprocket 18, which is mounted on a frame 19 formed with a sleeve 20 rotatably mounted on a screw 22 rigidly mounted on the cycle frame 54 by a two-part clamp 55<1>, 55<2> and a bolt 56, the sleeve 20 being rotated by means of a cable 31 and a hand control-lever 58, whereby the frame 19 is given a pivotal movement to move the chain guide 18 towards the axis of the sprockets 15, 16, 17 on the driven wheel. A spring 28 connected to a lever 26 effects the return movement of the frame 19, and also acts on a chain-tensioning roller 25. The screw 22 causes, simultaneously with the pivotal movement, a transverse movement of the frame 19 and chain guide 18, to shift the chain from one sprocket to another, the movement from a smaller to a larger sprocket being assisted by a member 24 projecting from the frame 19 and adapted to engage the intermediate part 14 of the chain. In a modification the chain guide is arranged to be in immediate proximity to the teeth of the smallest sprocket when the high speed is in gear.
