506,346. Float - operated valves. BURROWS, S. F. Nov. 25, 1937, No. 32479. [Class 135] A valve device adapted to be fitted as a separate fitment in_a float-operated cock of the type in which the valve is opened against the pressure of the fluid supply comprises a tubular member or assembly of members 13, 21 having a valve seat 27 and slidably supporting a valve carrying stem 19 which projects beyond one end of the fitting for engagement by a slidable plunger 6 operated by a float arm 3. Are. stricted inlet is provided in the end or side of the tubular member between the valve and the inlet to main housing 1 of the cock so as to direct the liquid against the valve to assist in closing it. As shown the assembly of tubular members comprises a plug 13 screwed into the main housing 1 up to a washer 16, and a ported cap 21 which provides the restricted inlet and is screwed on to the plug 13. The valve member comprises a collar 25 which may be integral with the stem 19, but when separate therefrom is made of rubber or leather. It may be of conical, or part spherical or part ellipsoidal shape. To enable the valve to be reversed when worn, the spindle may be made in two parts screwed together at 2(i and the collar made double conical, or of complete spherical or ellipsoidal shape. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which a valve unit 38 is threaded into the main housing by a part 37 and contains a separate valve seat 30 bearing a rubber or leather cone 31 and held in place by a nut 34. A valve pin 28 carrying a valve member 29 and passing with clearance through the parts 30, 34 projects from the unit 38 for engagement by the plunger 6. The valve is urged to the closed position by a spring 36 abutting a guide cap 35 which restricts the inlet. The compression of the spring may be such as to balance the weight of the float arm when the float is removed.
