Abstract
584,302. Valve gear. ORD. L. R., and ORD. L. C. Dec. 28, 1944, No. 26006. [Class 7 (vi)] A valve tappet, Fig. 1, with two members 1 and 2 in teleseopic relation with an oil or other fluid chamber 3 between, them for maintaining axial adjustment, say between a cam and a valve stem, has a chamber 8 in member 2 in which is contained an inertia piston 17 which on reiprocation of the tappet forces the liquid, supplied through the passage 10, through its central passage 20 into the chamber 3. The inertia piston 17 has a large diameter central portion terminating in two spigots 18 and 19, the spigot 19 which is of larger diameter than spigot 18 engages the chamber 13 and serves as the compressing piston, acting against the ball valve 14 on seat 16, forcing the fluid through another valve 21 into the chamber 3. In a modification, Fig. 4, showing an alternative shape for the inertia piston, the fluid is supplied direct to the chamber 8 through passages 10 and 9, and the lower spigot of the inertia piston which is supported with a spring contained in the compression chamber serves as the non-return valve. In another modification the inertia piston has an annular portion on its enlarged section which makes a sliding fit in the chamber 8 so as to shut off the supply of fluid when the piston is at the top of its stroke. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the tappet carries its own supply of fluid in a recess between the members 1 and 2 formed by a flexible coupling 12.
