Abstract

376,991. Safety valves. CONSOLIDATED ASHCROFT HANCOCK CO., Elias Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut, U.S.A. -(Assignees of Eplett, A. D. ; Elias Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut, U.S.A.). Aug. 24, 1931, No. 23761. Convention date, March 19. [Class 135.] A safety valve has a valve member with a tubular extension which forms part of a back pressure chamber, an orifice in the cover of which is provided with closing means which operate as the valve returns to its seat. A seating surface 4 is provided on a bushing 5 screwed into the inlet 2. The tubular extension 13a of the valve member 13 is guided in a cylindrical sleeve 8, integral ring projections 8a, 8b on which bear against an annular portion 1a of the casing 1. A spindle 12 which rests at its lower end in a cavity in the valve members 13, to which the movement of the spindle is transmitted by a pin 15, passes with some clearance through a nut 14 screwed into the cover of the portion 13a and thence through an orifice 11 in a loose annulus 10a confined by a screw-threaded ring 10b in a recess in the integral cover 10 of the guiding sleeve 8. A blow-down ring 23 screwed to the bushing 5 has a conical inside surface 24 which forms with a corresponding surface 25 on the portion 13a, one part of a huddling chamber 22, the other part of which is formed by the overhang 21 of the valve member 13, and the top of the bushing 5. A passage (or passages) 26 leads from the huddling chamber 22 to a back pressure chamber comprising the interior of the extension 13a and an upper chamber 9 between the cover 10 and the cover of the extension 13a. In the closed position of the valve, a cylindrical enlargement 28 on the spindle 12 closes the orifice 11 but in the full open position, a shoulder 27 on said enlargement occupies the orifice 11 and pressure fluid can escape through the passage then available, said passage being constricted and pressure built up in the back pressure chamber when the valve commences to return to its seat. The lower abutment 18 of a spring 19 engages a shoulder 16 on the spindle 12. The upper abutment 20 is adjusted by an externally threaded sleeve 20a held in the yoke 7.
