482,167. Opening asbestos fibres. MAGNANI, A. Feb. 22, 1937, Nos. 5302 and 5303. Convention dates, Feb. 22, 1936 and Sept. 1, 1936. [Class 120 (i)] A defibrator or opener for the preparation of asbestos fibres and the like comprises a succession of adjacent treatment chambers 1 .. 4, Fig. 1, of substantially cylindrical shape communicating with each other through apertures 8 .. 13 in their end walls and each provided with a set of beating arms 17 carried by a common longitudinal shaft 16, the advance of the material between successive chambers being assisted by a current of air produced by the rotation of the beating arms. The outlet apertures 8, 9, 10 of chambers 1, 2, 3 are connected by conduits 5, 6, 7 to the outlet apertures 11, 12, 13 of chambers 2, 3, 4, and a feed hopper 14 communicates with the inlet 18 of chamber 1 and an outlet pipe 15 with the outlet 19 of chamber 4. The apertures 8, 9, 10 may be displaced radially and their size varied as required while the beater arms 17 consist of chains. In a simpler form the opener comprises a cylindrical drum divided into compartments by diaphragms 24 provided with passages 25, 26, Fig. 5, regulated by adjustable slide valves 27, 28 the beater consisting of a shaft having a series of adjustable, inclined blades 31, 31<1>.
