464,473. Motor-vehicle driving-gear. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. Oct. 15, 1935, No. 28515. Convention date, Oct. 16, 1934. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 16, 1936.] [Class 79 (ii)] In a vehicle in which the engine and gear-box are made in a unit with the differential gear i<1> driving two axles i<2>, i<3>, and in which the shaft l<2> driving one of the axles passes through a hollow change-speed gear shaft 5, the loose constantmesh gear wheels 6, 15 on the hollow shaft are selectively coupled as desired to the hollow shaft by the slidable gear wheels 13, 14. The gear wheels 6, 15 are in constant mesh with gears 17, 20 on the lay shaft 16, and the loose gears 13, 14 splined on the hollow shaft can be moved axially either to engage gears 18, 19 or to couple the gears 6, 15 to the hollow shaft. In the construction shown the engine g is at the rear of the vehicle and the hollow shaft 5 is between the clutch shaft 3 and the lay shaft 16 and is above the wheel axles which are driven through worm gears 11, 8. In a modification the hollow shaft is at the same level as the bevel-driven wheel axles, and the lay shaft 16 is between the clutch shaft and the hollow shaft. The differential gear i<1> is preferably of the kind shown in Fig. 2 in which the hollow driving shaft 5 carries a cage 27 for locking members 26 disposed between driven members 25, 28 fixed to shafts l<1>, l<2> driving the differential gears on the axles i<2>, i<3>.
