Abstract

Polyethylenepolyamine mixtures, containing substantial proportions of compounds of the formul H2N(C2H4NH)nC2H4NH2 and (C2H4NH)n in which n is greater than 2, are converted into quaternary ammonium compounds by treatment with alkylating or aralkylating agents. In an example, a polyethylenepolyamine mixture is freed by distillation from the fraction boiling up to 220 DEG C. under 10 mm. pressure, and the residue is treated with dimethyl sulphate in an aqueous medium kept alkaline with sodium carbonate. Arylsulphonic acid alkyl esters may also be used as alkylating agents; benzyl chloride is specified as an aralkylating agent. Alkylation may be effected in two stages; in the first stage, tertiary amines are formed by treating the starting material with an alcohol and hydrochloric acid, while in the second stage quaternary ammonium compounds are formed by further alkylation. The products are useful for after-treating cellulosic materials dyed with substantive dyes, to improve the fastness of the dyeings. Specifications 423,864 and 423,933 are referred to.
