Abstract

Iron or steel is freed from rust, blackened, and rendered rust-resistant by immersion in a bath consisting of between 0,9 and 1,1 parts by weight of water and 2 parts of a mixture of sodium nitrite, sodium nitrate, and sodium hydroxide in equal or approximately equal proportions, with or without a small quantity, e.g. about 1 per cent of sodium carbonate. The bath is used at a temperature of 145--155 DEG C. A bath formed by dissolving a mixture comprising 1 per cent of sodium carbonate and 33 per cent of each of sodium nitrite, sodium nitrate, and sodium hydroxide may be regenerated by adding a mixture consisting of 80 per cent of sodium hydroxide, 9 per cent of sodium nitrite, 9 per cent of sodium nitrate, and 2 per cent of sodium carbonate.
