[Class 7 (vi)] [See also Group XXXIV] Four overhead radial valves are actuated by rockers a engaging inclined cams c on a pair of cam shafts c<1>, the rockers being formed with ball ends which engage shoes b bearing on the cams. The cam shaft bearings c<2> are detachably supported by bolts and nuts fitted with asbestos washers to insulate from heat. The cam shafts are driven by worm gearing d, d from a vertical shaft e, when this shaft is arranged between an inlet and an exhaust valve. In a modification, the vertical shaft is placed between two exhaust or two inlet valves, and drives through bevel gear a single cam shaft having two inclined cams, one of whch actuates the two rockers of the inlet valves, and the other the two rockers of the exhaust valves. Oil for lubricating is pumped up the hollow shaft e into a shallow cup g, whence it is distributed by centrifugal force. Oil is flung on to the underside of the top of the housing, where tapered projections drop it on to the rocker bearings. Oil also drops from the inspection cover h on to the driving-gears, an overflow k being provided leading to the casing of the shaft e.
