Abstract

Lubricant conveyed by mechanical means; filtering. - An internal-combustion engine is lubricated by a chain 8 which lifts oil from a well 3 situated below the crank case and formed in a sump 2 to which it is connected by an opening 4 and a filter tube 5. The filter is removable through a hole in the wall closed by a plug. The chain 8 runs on an idle wheel 7 in the well and is driven from the engine shaft. Oil is thrown against a guard 10 and passes into a channel 11 and through openings 12 into the crank case. Oil vapour is conveyed to other parts of the engine, such as the valve mechanism 20, by the valve-rods 14, which are hollow and project into a space 15 open to the well. The rods have side openings 16, 17 at their ends, and, during reciprocation of the rods, these openings are alternately covered and uncovered by the casing.
