Abstract
352,753. Lubricating passages in crank shafts. WOLSELEY MOTORS (1927), Ltd. and TOWLER, C. O., Drew's Lane, Ward End, Birmingham. July 28, 1930, No. 22627. [Class 12 (ii).] A lubricant conduit in the crank shaft 2 of an internal-combustion engine communicates with a passage or passages 18 provided in, and leading to the periphery of, a portion of the shaft 2 which is not subjected to torsional stress, the said passage or passages 18 communicating with passages 15, 11, 13 exterior to the crank shaft and leading to a chamber housing the valve operating or other mechanism to be lubricated. The passages 11, 13, 15 are provided entirely in rotating parts. As shown for an aircraft engine in which a gear 6 on the shaft 2 meshes with a gear 8 on the airscrew shaft 9 the passages 15, 11 are connected by the usual clearances between interengaging splines on the shaft 2 and gear 6, and the passages 13 are formed by clearances between serrations on the gear 6 and a gear 14 which drives the valveactuating mechanism. The crank shaft has an axial hole 19 through which lubricant passes to a flange 20 on the airscrew shaft to lubricate the gears 6, 8.
