Abstract

418,517. Crank shafts. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London. April 26, 1933, No. 12166. [Class 80 (ii).] A crank shaft for an internal-combustion engine has a hollow crank pin or journal for the passage of liquid lubricant, and a guide therein which causes the liquid to follow a helical path as it flows longitudinally through the pin or journal. A cooling effect combined with separation of solid matter from the liquid is obtained. As shown, the guide may take the form of a helical plug D<2> notches D<6> being cut in the helix on the side nearest the axis of the shaft to prevent the formation of air-locks. The plug is held in position by grub-screws D4 threaded in continuations of the passages E<1> by which the liquid flows through the crankwebs. The journals C are lubricated by pipes C<2> having holes C<3> near the axis of the journal. In a modified journal, not shown, a helical plug similar to D<2> is provided, a single lubricating tube or boss being arranged to project so that its opening is close to the plug. The crankpins may also be provided with lubricating tubes or with a simple passage D<5> on the side nearest the crank axis. The liquid is pumped into the crank shaft through radial holes co-operating with an annular bearing and passes out through a relief valve.
