432,131. Motor-vehicle driving-gearing ; rail motor vehicles. FELL, L. F. R., 48, De Vere Gardens, Kensington, London. Feb. 6, 1934, No. 3879. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] A motor vehicle is provided with a hollow driving road or track wheel axle 6 and a shaft 19 which extends freely through the axle and is connected through universal couplings 20, 21 with the axle and with gearing between the shaft and the power unit of the vehicle. In the construction shown applied to a railway vehicle having a body 1 mounted on bogies 2, the bogie has two hollow axles 6 each driven by a separate electric, steam, or internalcombustion motor 7 which may have its power shaft extending transversely of the vehicle, as shown, or longitudinally. The internal-combustion engine 7 shown drives the shaft 19 through spur gears 12-14 mounted on bearings in a gear-case 18 fixed to the bogie frame 2. The bogie frame 2 is slotted at 22 to permit vertical movement relatively to the axle. Instead of spur gearing, chain, bevel or other gearing may be used. A compartment 9 may be arranged over each motor to permit inspection thereof and to house fuel tanks, the forward compartment being also used for the driver.
