Class 79 (ii) A rail vehicle has bogies with individually driven wheel sets, including a fluid drive for each wheel set, an engine and main reduction gear mounted on the vehicle frame connected by carden shafts to each wheel set, each cardan shaft having two universal joints of which one is connected to a stub shaft mounted on the main frame and the other to a stub shaft journalled on the bogie, each cardan shaft being so disposed that its universal joints are on opposite sides of the bogie pivot. As shown, mounted on the main frame 1 is the engine 5 having a driving shaft 13, a gear train 11, 12 through which the drive passes to two fluid drives 9 and a secondary gear train 10. Drive is then taken through cardan shaft 18 to bevel reduction gear 19 mounted on the axle of driven wheels 4, and through shaft 20 to gearing 22 carried by the main frame and through cardan shaft 23 to reduction bevel gear 24 mounted on the axle of driven wheels 3. Driven wheels 3 and 4 are mounted on the bogie frame 2 connected to the main frame 1 by pivot 6. The axle-mounted bevel gear drives are supported by brackets 25, 26 articulated to the bogie frame. In an alternative arrangement there may be two driven bogies, each bogie carrying its own primary gear train, fluid drives and secondary gear train, drive being transmitted from the engine to the primary gear train through a cardan shaft disposed symmetrically of the bogie pivot. In a further modification two engines are employed each mounted on the main frame and each driving the wheels of one bogie.
