483,257. Motor vehicles. ZAVODY TATRA AKCIOVA SPOLECNOST PRO STAVBU AUTOMOBILU A ZELEZNICNICH VOZU. May 7, 1937, No. 13065. Convention date, July 8, 1936. [Class 79 (iii)] A motor vehicle is provided with an engine having two or more radially disposed cylinders in a common horizontal plane arranged above the roof of the vehicle and in direct coupled engagement with a vertical transmission shaft conveying the drive to the change speed gear or to an undercarriage. As shown, the radial cylinder engine 1 is carried by a vertical tube 6 arranged centrally between two rear driving axles 3, 4, the transmission shaft 5 passing through the tube. A stream lined removable cover 7 is provided, with apertures 8, 8<1> for admission and escape of cooling air. As applied to rail vehicles, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), in one form, the engine is arranged in the centre of the carriage roof, the drive from the vertical shaft being conveyed through bevel gearing and articulated shafting to one or both axles, whilst, in another form, in which the carriage is mounted on bogie trucks, an engine is arranged above each bogie, driving one or both axles thereof.
