Abstract

386,785. Oil engines. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I. and THORNYCROFT, T., Smith Square, London. Dec. 31, 1931, No. 36092. [Class 7 (iii).] In a compression ignition engine with the valves when closed arranged to be approximately flush with the cylinder top so that practically all the air charge is driven into a small combustion chamber 1, this chamber is cylindrical with flat sides 1a. 1b; the communicating passage 4 between the chamber and cylinder 3 is tangential to the cylindrical surface. The edges 4b, 4c of this passage may be in a vertical plane containing the axis of the chamber. The fuel injection valve 6 is set opposite the passage 4 and may be inclined as shown or vertical ; the starting igniting plug 7 may be arranged in the cylindrical wall of the chamber 1 or in a detachable side 8. The combustion chamber is shown to one side of the cylinder axis but it may be centrally disposed. Instead of being vertical as shown the chamber may be horizontal to one side of the cylinder, the communicating passage 4 being formed in part in the cylinder 3 and in part in the detachable head.
