[Class 136 (ii).] In variable-speed driving mechanism for cycles, of the type in which the chain is adapted to be shifted from one sprocket wheel to another while the cycle is in motion, the chain passes through a guide formed of segmental plates 1, 2 and connected to a slide 13, which is movable laterally in a guide 12 carried by a clip or clamp 7 secured to the cycle frame, the chain being thus shifted from one power chain wheel to another. The slide 13 is actuated from a hand-lever on the top frame tube or handle-bar &c. by means of a looped cable, which passes through a slot 11 and around a pulley 16, to which it is secured, a pinion fixed to the pulley 16 meshing with a rack cut in the slide 13.
