Abstract

348,193. Variable-speed gearing. SCHOTTLER, G. T., 258, Brockley Road. Brockley, London. Feb. 10, 1930, No. 4512. [Class 80 (ii).] _ Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a planet-carrying casing 4 fast on the driving-shaft 2 which casing drives a governor which functions to control the speed of driven shaft 3 by exerting braking pressure on a control sun gear 11. There are interengaging planets 8, 9 with terminal gears 7, 10 meshing respectively with the control sun 11 and with a sun gear 17 splined at 18 on the driven shaft 3. When shaft 2 starts to revolve, as when the engine clutch of a vehicle is engaged, a shaft 26 carrying governor 28 is set revolving, and also sun gear 11 is set revolving faster than shaft 2 in the same direction. Governor 28 exerts a braking action in gear 11 to control the speed automatically, either by a clutch 41 slidable on shaft 2, or by a brake 16. In the arrangement shown, the clutch gears up to direct drive, and the brake gears up beyond that. An air pump 53 constantly driven from shaft 26 replenishes a reservoir, not shown, through duct 54. Compressed air is delivered from reservoir through duct 56 to distributing valve 55. To engage the drive, or change up, the engine is accelerated. The speeded-up governor 28 through lever 35 turns valve 55 to admit air to cylinder 62, which through linkage 47 engages clutch 41 so as to diminish the rate at which gear 11 runs faster than shaft 2. If the driver wants a higher speed than direct drive, he releases clutch 41 by opening a valve 67 and closes a valve 66, whereupon, on speeding-up the engine further, valve 55 sends air to cylinder 59 applying brake 16. Reversed driving is effected, by sliding two pairs of gears, 17, 67<1> and 601, 611 to the right. The reversed drive passes through train 25, 601, 61<1>, 63', 681, 67<1> to shaft 3.
