Abstract

511,791. Motor-vehicle driving gear. COTAL, J. Feb. 23, 1938, No. 5740. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1937. [Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A driving shaft 5 is operatedfrom a motor shaft 1 through a reversing device 6 and in line with the driving shaft are two shafts 7, 8 particularly applicable to operation of the wheels or propelling devices of a motor vehicle and each of the two shafts is operated independently through the medium of a variable speed gear of the type in which the speeds are introduced by electromagnetic clutch and brake means; the two shafts may be braked independently by electromagnetic brakes. The variable-speed gears each provide the same series of speeds and may be four-speed gears each comprising two sets of planetary gearing in series. The first of these sets comprises a wheel 9 secured to the driving shaft, a ring 10 with internal teeth and planetary pinions 11 mounted on a planetary pinion carrier 12. The ring 10 is carried by a disc 14 which may be attracted by a stationary electromagnet 15 or by an electromagnet 16 secured to the driving shaft. The second planetary set comprises a ring 18 with internal teeth secured to the planetary pinion carrier 12 of the first set, planetary pinions 19 carried by a planetary pinion carrier 20 secured to the driven shaft 7 or 8 and a wheel 17 secured to a disc 22. The disc 22 is attracted by a stationary electromagnet 23 or by an electromagnet 24 secured to the shaft 7 or 8. Each of the driven shafts 7 or 8 may be braked independently by exciting the respective electromagnets 23 and 24 simultaneously. The supply of current to the electromagnetic speed-changing and braking devices may be controlled by 'the steering wheel of a vehicle. Resistances of various values can be inserted in the brake circuit to give various degrees of braking. Between each driven shaft and its respective propelling device a speed reduction gearing 26 may be inserted. The speed reduction gears are preferably simultaneously controlled by a linkage 34.
