Abstract
365,585. Variable speed gearing. SHIPWRIGHT, W. G., ELLIOTT, A. C., and ANDERSON, J. G., 102, Abbey House, Victoria Street, London. July 21, 1930, No. 22007. [Class 80 (ii).] In a variable transmission gear comprising a gear train and hydraulic resistance device, changes in operation are effected successively in accordance with the speeds of the driving and driven members. The driving shaft 1, Fig. 1, carries planet pinions 5 of three diameters 6, 7, 8 meshing with coaxial sun-wheels 6a, 7a, 8a. The sun-wheel 8a is keyed to the driven shaft 2, the sun-wheel 7a is rotatably carried on the driven shaft by a sleeve 7b having a clutch member 10, and the sun-wheel 6a has a clutch member 11 slidably connected thereto. The hydraulic resistance device comprises a cylinder 16 provided with vanes 19, Fig. 2, and carried by the driven shaft, the cylinder being disposed within an elliptical or other shaped cylinder 17 having vanes 20; the cylinder 17 is enclosed in an elliptical chamber in the fixed gear casing 18. When an operating lever 12 is in the neutral position shown, the clutch plates 10, 11 are out of engagement with the cylinder 17 and gear casing respectively. When a forward drive is desired, the lever 12 is operated to engage the plate 10 with the cylinder 17, so that the latter is rotated, the resistance to such rotation causing torque to be applied to the sun-wheel 8a, and a low gear drive to be obtained. Clearances may be provided at the tips of the vanes 20, the clutch 10 may be engaged gradually, or valve-controlled passages may interconnect the compartments 24. During the low-gear drive, there is no resistance inside the cylinder 17, liquid byepassing the vanes 19 through channels 25. When the shaft 2 attains the necessary speed, weights 26 are moved centrifugally to cause pads 28 to close the channels 25, and a direct drive is transmitted. When reverse drive is desired, the lever 12 is operated to move the clutch plate 11 into engagement with the casing and lock the sun-wheel 6a.
