Abstract

414,898. Clutches ; change-speed gearing. HASSALL, T. G., 9, Albert Square, and STEPHENS, R. G., 18, Park Avenue, Longsight, both in Manchester. Aug. 12, 1933, No. 22536. [Class 80 (ii).] A centrifugally-acting clutch for motor vehicles and the like comprises a liquidcontaining drum 6 secured to the engine shaft 4, and a swash-plate 8 which is centrally fulcrumed within the drum and is caused to rotate therewith by the engagement of slots in the plate with vanes 9 in the drum. The plate coacts with the inclined end of a member 14, which is splined on the end of a shaft 13 and can be withdrawn from engagement with the plate under the control of a collar 15 actuated by a yoke 14a secured to a rock shaft 31. With the engine idling, the plate 8 can oscillate freely within the drum, while as the engine speed is increased the centrifugal pressure of the liquid resists such oscillation and torque is transmitted to the shaft 13. The clutch is shown combined with epicyclic gearing, comprising a sun pinion 19 formed on an extension 11 of the drum 6, planet pinions 20 meshing therewith and with a toothed annulus 23 freely mounted on a final driven shaft 5, the pinions 20 being carried by a member 21 secured to the shaft 13. A sun pinion 27 also secured to the shaft 13 meshes with planet pinions 25 carried by a member 26 secured to the shaft 5, the pinions 25 being in mesh with a sun pinion 24 secured to the annulus 23. A brake drum 29 is carried by the pins 28 supporting the pinions 20. A rock shaft 35 carrying cams 36 controlling a brake band 30 is operated in unison with the shaft 31 through adjustable connections 32, 33, 34 so that when the brake is applied the member 14 is withdrawn from the plate 8. With the engine idling and the vehicle stationary, the drum 6 acts through the gearing to rotate the member 14 idly in the same direction but at a smaller speed. As the engine speed is increased, the speed of the member 14 gradually approaches engine speed, causing shaft 5 to be driven, until finally a solid drive is obtained. By applying the brake, and consequently withdrawing the member 14, a reverse drive is obtained.
