Abstract

405,494. Scavenging and charging ; starting. BUCHI, A., 20, Salstrasse, Winterthur, Switzerland. May 1, 1933, No. 12674. Convention date, May 13, 1932. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (v).] In an engine having blowers driven by the exhaust gases, the cylinders are provided with positively-operated exhaust valves and with automatic inlet valves which control ports beyond the stroke of the piston and open only when the charging- pressure is in excess of the cylinder pressure. One of the inlet valves may serve also to admit starting-air. In the engine shown, exhaust past cam-actuated valves 13 is directed to a turbine 2 driving a blower 3, which delivers compressed charge to automatic inlet valves 14. There are several inlet valves 14 to each cylinder, and in some of the cylinders, one of these valves 14a may be used to admit starting-air. This air is prevented from entering the charging conduit 6 by non-return valves 17. The starting-air is supplied from a reservoir 16 through a pipe 26, valves 19, and pipes 15, the valves being worked by a cam on the exhaust cam shaft. This cam may be brought into action simultaneously with the opening of the starting valve 22.
