885,296. Two-stroke engines; exhaust ports and passages; charge pumps; valves. DOXFORD & SONS (ENGINEERS), Ltd., WILLIAM, JACKSON, P., and TAYLOR, E. May 12, 1958, No. 15186/58. Classes 7(2) and 7(6). An exhaust passage 18, Fig. 3, flanged to take a turbocharger, is connected by expansion joints 17 to exhaust belts 14b of adjacent cylinders of an in-line opposed-piston diesel engine, there being as many passages 18 and turbochargers as there are cylinder pairs, and a further turbocharger for any remaining cylinder, the turbochargers producing scavenge and/or combustion air. Side rods 10 operate the pistons remote from the crank-shaft. To allow supercharging, exhaust ports 12b, Fig. 4, uncovered by respective pistons before exhaust ports 12a, are appropriately closed by valves 26 oscillated or rotated by a cam-shaft via chains, push rods or gearing. All the passages 18 may feed one turbocharger.
