Abstract

237,915. Oil Engine Development Co., (Assignees of Cummins, C. L.). July 30, 1924, [Convention date]. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-Fuel is supplied during the suction stroke of the working piston 7 through a valve 14 to an annular space 20, where it is highly heated, and whence it passes through grooves 19 to a central space 17 below a plunger 11. The central space 17 communicates with the working cylinder through fine orifices 21. While the fuel is being supplied to the space 17, the plunger 11 is slowly retracted so as to prevent drip through the orifices 21. During the compression stroke, the fuel is mixed with and vaporized by hot air from the cylinder entering through the orifices 21, and at the beginning of the working stroke the resulting mixture of vaporized fuel and air is injected into the cylinder by the descent of the plunger 11. The plunger has a conical end which fits within a corresponding seating when the plunger is fully depressed, so as to ensure the complete evacuation of the air and fuel from the space below the plunger. In a modified construction, the plunger 11 is formed with a concave spherical or conical end,. and the lower face of the chamber is provided with a corresponding conical or spherical projection, through a central orifice in which the fuel is admitted from the valve 14. The spraying orifices 21 are formed in the periphery of the lower end of the cylinder within which the plunger works, and are preferably tangential to this cylinder. The fuel may be supplied through the valve 14 either by gravity or by a pump.
