Abstract

311,834. Dehn, F. B., (Oil Engine Development Co.). Dec. 23, 1927. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-Air is compressed through an orifice 41 into a cavity 40 in the piston during the instroke, and escapes at the end of the stroke through the same orifice 41 against fuel issuing from a nozzle 24. The fuel is, as described in Specification 237,915, first drawn, with air from the cylinder, past a needle valve 16 into a chamber 19, by the upward movement of a plunger 11, and the aerated fuel is then ejected into the cylinder by the return of the plunger 11. To cool the chamber 19 an inner member 13 is made of a good heatconducting material-e.g. aluminium-outer protecting members 14, 15 being made of steel or a metal having low heat conductivity. An annular space 23 and radial grooves leading to a central orifice 18 are provided for the fuel between the members 13, 14. The cavity 40 may be formed as shown by an annular member 32, which is screw-threaded into the piston face, a locking washer, having lugs 35, 38, turned up and down, being provided; alternatively the annular member may be closed at its inner end and locked by a pin driven into the piston.
