Abstract

201,022. Maxwell, J. D. July 11, 1922. Lift valves ; closure members; stops, adjustable; leakage, stopping. -A lift valve operated by a screwed spindle is provided with two closure members acting on opposite sides of the seating, one being rotatably mounted on the spindle, and the other in screwed engagement with it. The cross partition 9 of the casing is provided with two opposed seats 10, 11, engaged by closure members 12, 13. The member 12 is rotatably mounted on the spindle 14, and the member 13 contains a screwed socket 18 engaging with the screwed end 19 of the spindle, the member being non-circular to prevent rotation. A spring 22 is provided to press the lower valve to its seat, so that this valve remains seated if the upper valve is withdrawn. If both valves are seated, and the spindle is rotated, the lower valve remains seated while the spindle carrying the upper valve rises. When the collar 15 engages with the cover 6, the upward movement of the spindle ceases, and the lower valve is then forced downward. A vent passage may be provided to prevent accummulation of pressure in the recess 18. The lower valve may be forced against its seating by a screw 23 which may be locked by a nut 27. Leakage along this screw may be prevented by means of its conical head, and the nut 27, both of which may engage the casing. This screw also serves as an adjustable, stop to limit the opening of the lower valve. When the lower valve is closed, the upper valve may be removed for repairs, and a cap 7 is also provided for the removal of the lower valve when required.
