Abstract
168,980. Christiansen, E. June 10, 1920. Actuating - mechanism; leakage, stopping and discharging.-A tap or valve is operated by a screwed spindle against the fluid pressure, the pitch of the screw being such that the valve must be held open, but closes automatically when released. A diaphragm to prevent leakage is interposed between the operating spindle and the valve stem, but is not secured to either. The valve seating 2 has an annular rib 9 which engages with a flexible washer 8 carried by the valve 6. The valve stem 10 is rounded at the top and bears against a disc 12 carried by a rubber or metal diaphragm 11. The valve is opened against the fluid pressure by the rotation of a spindle 17 having a screw 18 with a pitch sufficiently large to enable it to return to the closed position when released. A small passage 26 is provided for returning any liquid leaking past the member 25. The closing of the valve may be assisted by a spring 21 bearing against the collar 22.
