Abstract

11,859. Marriott, T., and Darch, A. June 6. Composition fuel.-A waterproof agglutinant or binding-agent for fuel, minerals, and the like consists of pitch expanded by addition of waste cellulose such as flax, hemp, jute, or coco-nut fibre. Stockholm tar or gas tar may be added to the cellulose before or after mixing with the pitch, paraffin pitch, ordinary pitch, or mixtures of these being used. The agglutinant is mixed with coal dust, coke, carbon, powdered minerals, &c. either hot or cold, and with or without addition of hardening-substances such as gypsum, chalk, or barium carbonate, and substances to retard combustion. The resulting compound after heating is compressed. The Provisional Specification also states that a gummy substance obtained by treating the cellulose with alcohol, methylated spirit, or other solvent may be added to the above, or may be used with pitch or tar alone. In making the gummy extract, waste flax, for example, is sifted into three portions, long fibres, husks, and dust. The first two yield a liquid from which the gums may be precipitated by alum or other substance, the third portion forming a stiff paste.
