Abstract

215,058. Davies, A. E., and Davies, A. E. Jan. 27, 1923. Tobacco pipes.-A porous refractory plug for insertion in the bowl is made from a mixture of clay or other refractory material together with an agglutinant such as sodium silicate and finelypowdered combustible matter. The mixture is first moistened with water, moulded into shape and then fired, first at a low temperature and then at a sufficiently high temperature to burn off the combustible material. Examples mentioned of the latter are coal dust, powdered coke, paper pulp, and cotton waste. In the Provisional Specification it is stated also that sawdust may be used. The refractory materials mentioned are china and pipe clays and asbestos.
