Abstract

167,616. Lanchester, F. W. May 20, 1920. Adjusting radial axles for steering.-The steering-axle is pivotally connected to two longitudinal cantilever spring members connected by transverse members which are parallel with the axle and are centrally pivoted to the body, steering being effected by defiecting one of the transverse members from a hand wheel. The longitudinal members C, C', which may be of hickory or ash, are pilvotally connected by transverse members D, E and the axle B which may be fitted with a single wheel A or a pair of wheels may be provided on extensions. The members D, E are pivoted centrally to the vehicle body, the pivot f<1> of the member D being operated for steering from the hand-wheel J. The operating-mechanism may comprise a Hooke's joint H, a bevel-wheel and sector, or a rack-and-pinion gear. The pivot joints are fitted with thrust bearings, and the members D, E may be in the form of steel trusses. Specification 166,017, [Class 79 (ii), Motor vehicles, Driving &c.], is referred to.
