Abstract
490,620. Motor-vehicle steering - gear. RONALD, F. D. H. June 2, 1937, No. 15301. [Class 79 (v)] Relates to vehicles of the kind in which the rear wheels as well as the front wheels are steered and are driven through universal joints concentric with the steering pivots, and comprises in combination a bracket 2 fixed to each end of the rear axle casing 1, a back-plate 6 carrying the stub-axle shaft 10, pivot pins 4 passing through pairs of lugs 3, 5 on the bracket and backplate and having the required angular set to the plane of the wheel, ball races 14, 11 for the axle-shaft 12 and the stub-axle shaft 10, a universal joint 15 connecting the shafts 12, 10. a track rod 16 coupling together extensions 18 of the brackets 2, and a steering arm 17 on one of the extensions operated by the steering-gear. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the steering-gear (not shown) operates a lever 20 which is connected by a drag-link 19 to the steering arm 17 of the rear wheels 8 and by links 21, 22 to a steering arm 23 of the front wheels 24. The invention may be applied to vehicles having six, eight, or more wheels.
