721,784. Driving steering-wheels of motor-vehicles. KIRKSTALL FORGE ENGINEERING, Ltd., and COWELL, F. R..June 10, 1953 [July 18, 1952], No. 18205/52. Classes 79(2) and 79(5). In a steering and driving axle arrangement having a universal joint 51, 52 in a driving shaft 12, the wheel hub 21 being mounted by two bearings 15, 20 on a swivel axle 19 supported on an axle casing 16, and a hub reduction gear connecting the hub and the shaft 12, the hub reduction gear is disposed between the bearings 15, 20..A gear wheel 25 is formed on the end of the shaft 12, and meshes with three pinions 26 mounted in a carrier 27 keyed to the swivel axle 19. The shaft 12 is journalled in bearings 53 and 24 which prevent and permit respectively, axial movement of the shaft 12. The gear wheel 25 is wide enough to permit it to partake in axial movement relative to the pinions 26. The universal joint comprises a pair of Hooke's joints 51, 52. Specifications 119,820, [Class 79(ii)], and 517,465 are referred to.
