Abstract
631,105. Motor vehicle steering gear. BISHOP, R., and JOHNSTON, R. H. May 20, 1946, No. 15249. [Class 79 (v)] In a steering gear for automobile vehicles with independently sprung steerable wheels of the type in which a member 5 is disposed transversely of the vehicle for endwise movement, is guided in or on spaced longitudinal chassis members 7 of the vehicle and has its ends operatively connected by link elements 9 to the steerable wheels, and a drag link 11 interconnects the transverse member 5 with the drop arm 3 of the steering gear 1, the drag link 11 is pivotally attached in the transverse member 5 at a point that always lies between the chassis members 7 throughout the movement of the transverse member 5. As shown the member 5 is guided on the chassis members 7 between part-toroidal surfaces 6a and spring-urged balls 12. The link elements 9 are universally jointed to the member 5 and are connected to steering arms of equal length as the elements 9. The connection of the drag link 11 with the member 5 and the drop arm 3 can be universal joints or in the form of a resilient bush 13. The drop arm 3 is rotated by the steering column 2 about a shaft 4 lying in a vertical longitudinal plane, and the arrangement is such that the drag link lies substantially parallel with the member 5. Specification 612,234, [Group XXV], is referred to.
