Abstract
393,862. Universal joints. A U T 0 UNION AKT.-GES., Chemnitz, Germany. Nov. 14, 1932, No. 32150. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1931. [Class 80 (ii).] In a universal joint for use on power-drive n vehicles having front wheels acting simultaneously as driving and steerable wheels, the two shafts 1, 2 are mutually supported in the direction I, Fig. 2, by hinge members 3, 4, and in a perpendicular direction II, Fig. 1, by a ball pivot 9 on the shaft 2 engaging a recess in the shaft 1, which recess allows relative displacement of the ball pivot 9 in the direction I. This displacement may be effected by the recess being cut through the shaft 1 in the direction I. The members 3, 4 are pivoted to one another by bolts 5, 6 and to their respective shafts 1, 2 by bolts 7, 8. The members 3, 4 have interfitting limbs and recesses and the drive between them and the shafts is transmitted by smooth parallel surfaces. As applied to a road vehicle, the shaft 1 receives its drive from the differential by meansof a universal joint, and the shaft 2, which carries the road wheel, is arranged to be axially immovable, the ball pivot 9 lying on the swivelling axis of the steerable wheels.
