Abstract

1483473 Metal lintels for supporting brickwork BIRTLEY MFG Ltd 6 Nov 1975 [9Nov 1974] 48586/74 Addition to 1303664 Heading E1K A sheet metal lintel for use in a cavity wall is of the general form described and claimed in the Parent Specification, but the forwardly and rearwardly extending horizontal plates 3, 8 are formed separately, the web 5 and top plate 7 being integral with one of the plates, while the other plate is secured e.g. by welding to the web at the ridge formed between the plates 3, 8. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the lintel consists of two parts 1, 2, the former comprising the forwardly extending plate 3, the web 5, the top plate 7 and intermediate inclined portions 4, 6, while the latter comprises the rearwardly extending plate 8, a short vertical portion 10 which is welded to the web 5, and an intermediate inclined portion 9 which, together with the inclined portion 4, forms the ridge. The Fig. 2 embodiment differs in that an additional reinforcing plate 15 and strengthening gussets 17, 18 are provided. In Fig. 3, an inclined web 21 replaces the web 5, the portion 10 integral with the plate 8 being correspondingly inclined. In other embodiments, the web 5 is vertical but may have a curved portion (22, Fig. 4, not) shown) leading into the top plate, or the web may be integral with the rearwardly extending plate 8 instead of the plate 3 (Fig. 5, not shown), or the inclined portion 9 of plate 8 may be omitted (Fig. 6, not shown).
